Instruction for Students:
- Read an article and learn about current events.
- When you read, look up new vocabulary.
- Pay attention to how the writers describe and analyze information in these news articles.
- Discuss your ideas on a current event in our English Learning Forum.
- Exchange ideas in English with your friends about the news.
Instruction for Teachers:
Use the news to inspire you to create your own lesson plans. Go to free lessons for students page to see how other teachers have used the news to create teaching resources. Share your lessons with other teachers at ESL Monkeys!
Here are two outlined examples of using the news in class:
1. A News Topic Based Lesson (Intermediate and up)
- Chose an article. Copy it and pass it out.
- Pre-teach new vocabulary.
- Read through the article with the class.
- Give the class a set of pre-made comprehension questions.
- Have them answer the questions in small groups.
- Have one group present the answers to one question.
- Discuss as a class.
2. Warmer (Intermediate and up)
- Print out an short article and pass one copy out to each small group (2-3 students) at the start of class.
- Read through the article one time for the class.
- Give each group five minutes to figure out the main ideas.
- Ask one group to present the main ideas to the rest of the class.
- Ask the other students to agree or disagree with the presenting group's information. Questions may be asked to the presenting group.
